Echoes of Oporto: An immersion into the Iberian Congress of Narrative Therapy

Last September, the city of Porto became the epicenter of knowledge and passion for Narrative Practices. Through LaPalma Psicología, I want to provide a glimpse into what was an intense and enriching journey at the First Iberian Congress of Narrative Therapy.

More than an academic event, this congress was a warm meeting of like-minded minds and hearts, a place for reunion and (re)discovery. I visualize the congress as an intricate tapestry, where each thread represents the stories and experiences that intertwine to form the vast and complex world of human relationships.

My contribution to the congress focused on three essential themes in current therapy:

  1. Invitations to Change with Men Who Exercise Violence Against Women: Main Discoveries: In this session, I shared the story of “Juan,” a fictional but representative testimony. Using narrative practices, I demonstrated how these practices can have a significant impact on men who have shown violent behaviors. By reexamining and challenging the dominant gender narratives, we offer a door towards change and reflection. The studies presented illuminate our path towards more humane and effective interventions.
  2. Life as a Puzzle – Expanding Alternative Stories to the Dominant Problem: The metaphor of the puzzle exemplifies how, at times, a dominant problem can eclipse the rest of our story. Through narrative therapy, we seek to uncover and highlight those pieces of the puzzle that have been overshadowed, moments that reflect hope, courage, and love. Each piece, no matter how small, is crucial to visualize the complete mosaic of our life.
  3. Are Meta-Analyses on Heterosexual Men Who Exercise Violence Against Their Partners Reliable? A Critical Reading from Narrative Practices: While meta-analyses claim objectivity, we find palpable discrepancies when reviewing five different studies. Against all logic, in practice, some approaches prevail despite ambivalent evidence. These inconsistencies push us to question the foundations of our therapeutic choice. Surprisingly, research in Narrative Therapy in this context remains an emerging chapter.

To conclude, I want to express my deep gratitude to everyone who contributed to making this congress an unforgettable experience. The dialogues, discussions, and above all, the shared learning are what make these meetings essential for our professional evolution. And to you, dear reader, I hope this synopsis has provided you a window into the wonderful universe of Narrative Therapy.

Until our next dialogue, and don’t forget: our story is constantly developing, and we are the narrators of every page.
